A very special interpretation of the symbol of the scarab featuring exceptional gemstones sourced all over the world.
This unique piece consists of a three piece inlay composed of Onyx and Ocean Jasper, which is a multicolored stone also commonly described as orbicular jasper due to the bulls-eye, flower and sometimes star patterns on its surface.
While Ocean Jasper only comes from one place in the world, the northwestern corner of Madagascar, there are two distinct deposits, about ten miles apart: Marovato, along the shoreline, and Kabamby, further inland. While the mine at Kabamby is still productive, the veins in Marovato, where this particular piece comes from, are currently tapped out.
The scarab symbol has been revered since ancient Egypt for representing the cycle of life, creation, death and rebirth. It has also been used as a form of protection by many cultures. If you are curious about the history of this fascinating talisman you can learn more here.
